Paul-Élie GERNEZ (1888-1948) – Lively landscape sketch with artist's handwritten note
  • Description:
Charming and intimate horizontal graphite study depicting a figure (probably a beachcomber or a peasant) moving through a vast flat space evoking the Normandy shoreline. This drawing has unique historical interest thanks to a handwritten note in the artist's own hand at the top left: “enter through the trees”, noting the technique for his future composition. Authenticated by the purple ink stamp of the estate at the bottom right.
  • Brief biography:
Inseparable from Honfleur, where he lived and worked, Paul-Élie Gernez (1888-1948) is famous for his clean and vibrant compositions. His sketchbooks, from which this sheet originates, were the laboratory of his work: in them he captured the essence of Norman life and the infinite variations of the coastal atmosphere.
  • Characteristics:
    • Technique: Original graphite drawing on period paper.
    • Dimensions: 10.5 X 7.5 cm.
    • Provenance: Artist's studio collection (purple estate stamp).
