Discover Robert Antral in video:
A painter of the Marne Valley
Robert Antral (1895–1939) was born in Châlons-sur-Marne and spent his short life capturing the light and landscapes of the Marne Valley. Trained at the School of Decorative Arts, he was mobilized in 1914-1918 and returned wounded.
After the war, he frequented Cormon's studio, received the Blumenthal Prize in 1926, and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne.
Illustrator of Pierre Mac Orlan, Genevoix, Kipling
Robert Antral was not only a painter. He was also a sought-after illustrator: Pierre Mac Orlan, Maurice Genevoix, Henry de Monfreid, Rudyard Kipling… His colorful watercolors and delicate engravings accompanied the greatest writers of his time.
The city of Paris even awarded an Antral Prize for a few years after his death, in homage to his talent.
