Adrien Jean Madiol, born on September 7, 1845, in Groningen, began his career in his hometown in 1866 before going to Belgium to train at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Nicaise De Keyser, and later at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He worked in Antwerp and then settled in Ixelles, where he is registered in the population register under the name Madyol. His works focus on domestic scenes, interiors in the tradition of the Dutch historical genre, and portraits. He met Vincent van Gogh and may have given him lessons in perspective; Van Gogh appreciated his work and recommended his name to his brother Theo for the Brussels Salon. His son, Jacques Madyol (1871–1950), also became a painter. Adrien Jean Madiol died on February 16, 1927, in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert.
