Biography

Julius Mordecai Pincas, known as Jules Pascin, was born on March 31, 1885 in Vidin, Bulgaria, and died on June 2, 1930 in Paris. Born into a wealthy family of merchants, he turned to art despite family disapproval. He moved to Paris in 1905, influenced by Fauvism and Cubism, and became a protagonist of the Montparnasse art scene, where he was nicknamed the "Prince of the Three Hills." Pascin formed relationships with several artists and models, including Hermine David, who became his wife, and Lucy Krogh, his mistress. Although he enjoyed some success, his life was marked by personal struggles, including alcoholism and doubts about his art. On June 2, 1930, the day of the opening of his exhibition, he committed suicide in his studio. His death shocked the Parisian art world, and he was buried in the Montparnasse cemetery. On his tomb, a poem by André Salmon highlights his free and tragic spirit, testifying to the impact of his life and work.
