Biography

Georges Van Haardt, born Jerzy Brodnicki in 1907 in Poznan, Poland, was a committed artist who first worked as a magistrate from 1933 to 1939 after obtaining a law degree and a doctorate in philosophy. In 1950, he moved to Paris, where he developed a unique artistic style, producing two distinct types of work: the black, collage-like works, and the colorful, non-figurative works, in which bright colors intertwine with irregular black scratches. His collages, often made from dark papers, create organic forms evoking seascapes and caverns. His art, marked by a mysterious universe, is often compared to that of Kandinsky in the 1910s. Georges Van Haardt's last posthumous exhibitions took place at the Galerie Jacques Barbier in 1985 and at the Bibliothèque Polonaise in 2009 and 2014. He died in Paris in 1980.
