Biography of Édouard Detaille

Édouard Detaille, born October 5, 1848 in Paris and died December 24, 1912, is a French painter and illustrator renowned for his military scenes and his work in uniformology. Considered one of the last masters of the genre of military painting before its gradual disappearance at the beginning of the 20th century, he is in the continuity of the neoclassical and romantic painters of the First Empire and the Napoleonic legend, such as François Gérard and Horace Vernet.
Detaille is known for his attention to historical detail and his respect for the technical accuracy of the actions depicted in his works. His paintings, characterized by a faithful representation of reality, seek to bring out the element considered essential in each scene. He became known for his tragic and sometimes very raw paintings of the Franco-German War of 1870, highlighting the heroic actions of the French.
