Biographie

French painter, illustrator, caricaturist, and cartoonist (1878–1918), Ricardo Florez is famous for his caricatures in publications such as Le Rire, L'Assiette au beurre, and Le Charivari. He also illustrated Maupassant and depicted the daily lives of Parisians and soldiers during the First World War.

Ricardo Florez, known as "Ricardo Florès", was born on October 20, 1878 in Alençon and died on October 20, 1918 in Rennes. Of Peruvian descent on his father's side, he entered the military engineering office in Alençon in 1894 as an auxiliary draftsman before joining the fine arts in 1896. He began producing caricatures and exhibited his drawings with Marcel Noblot and Eveli Torent. His first caricature appeared inLaughterin 1897, followed by contributions inThe Frou-frou,The Bon Vivant,The Butter Plate,The Charivari,The Nail,The Cry of Paris,The Little BlueAndReadings for all. He also illustrated literary works, notably by Maupassant and Jean Richepin, and executed some society portraits. Known for his elegance and humor, he frequented Montmartre and popular Paris, immortalized his characters and collaborated at various summer inns with other artists. During the First World War, he enlisted in August 1914 as a foreign volunteer at the Invalides and served in the 103rd Territorial Infantry Regiment, depicting in his drawings the daily life of the poilus and the enemy in feldgrau uniform. In 1914 he published a series of military caricatures entitledBoches!and died of sepsis due to an infected wound.
