The adoption of the pseudonym Gouast perhaps reflects a desire to reinvent himself artistically or to distance himself from his family origins, although these remain steeped in art. This identity transformation accompanies a unique geographical journey that first takes him to Africa for his first artistic steps.

The African context of his early life probably influenced his color sensitivity and his perception of light, elements that would later characterize his mature style. This exotic experience enriched his visual palette and nourished a pictorial approach open to chromatic contrasts.

The personal tragedy of losing his brother during World War II marked a major turning point in his career. This ordeal led to a creative silence lasting several years, a period of mourning and self-reflection that revealed the depth of his family ties and the impact of historical events on his artistic sensibility.

The 1945 revival marked an artistic renaissance characterized by a new maturity. His landscapes, with their vivid colors and rigorous compositions, demonstrate acquired technical mastery and a calm aesthetic vision. This creative period benefited from his travels and stays in Normandy and Spain, territories that nourished his inspiration with their rich light and landscapes.

His later years reveal a deepening of his introspective approach. Art became for him a means of inner exploration, his later works bearing the trace of an existential reflection matured by the experience of loss and time. This contemplative dimension distinguishes his final production and confirms the evolution of an artist who transforms personal hardship into creative depth.
