The son of glass artist Baptiste Petit Gérard, Pierre Petit Gérard grew up in an artistic environment that naturally led him to the arts. He continued his training at the Beaux-Arts in Paris under the direction of Jean-Léon Gérôme, where he acquired solid technical and artistic mastery.
Voluntarily enlisting in the army twice, first in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, then in 1914 during the First World War, he spent two years at the front, notably in Alsace and the Vosges. These military experiences profoundly influenced his works, giving his painting a historical and realistic dimension linked to the lives of soldiers and war landscapes.
