Charles Jean Mootz was born on July 16, 1889, in Paris, into a modest family. The son of Charles Nicolas Mootz, a salesman, and Marie Miller, a seamstress, he married Adrienne Augustine Chuard on December 12, 1912. Living at 1 Avenue Richerand in Paris, Mootz devoted himself to painting, specializing in seascapes and coastal landscapes. He worked primarily in Brittany, in Roscoff and Morlaix, where he captured the changing light and atmosphere of the Breton coast with finesse. His technique highlights maritime nuances, between the serenity and the harshness of the coastline. During the Second World War, Charles Mootz was seriously wounded during the fighting for the Liberation of Paris in August 1944 and died on August 28, 1944, at Saint-Louis Hospital. Posthumously, he received the mention "Mort pour la France" in recognition of his commitment. His works continue to bear witness to his unique artistic vision of the timeless beauty of the Breton coast.
