Kurt Opitz (1919-2011) was a German painter, draftsman, and graphic artist, a member of the GDR's Visual Artists' Association (VBK). His career included classical training, military service, imprisonment, and a freelance career in Elsterberg.

Kurt Opitz was born in 1919 in Elsterberg, Germany. He began his artistic training as a decorative painter before studying at the Plauen School of Art and Textile Industry in 1937-38. During World War II, he served in the army and was imprisoned from 1939 to 1948. In 1942-43, he was a guest student at the Berlin Academy, where he studied under Paul Thol, Wilhelm Tank, and Wilhelm Becker.


After the war, he returned to Elsterberg in 1948 and became a freelance artist from 1952. An active member of the GDR's Visual Artists' Association (VBK), he continued his artistic work in Elsterberg until his death in 2011, leaving a notable legacy in painting, drawing and graphics in Germany.
