Biography

José de Zamora (June 1, 1892 – December 4, 1971) was a Spanish illustrator, painter, stylist and writer, known as José de Zamora or Pepito Zamora. A student of Eduardo Chicharro, he positioned himself between modernism and the avant-garde, and was famous for his refined fashion figurines.
Zamora began his artistic career in 1910 with works for the magazines *Nuevo Mundo* and *La Esfera*. He worked as a designer for Paul Poiret in Paris before returning to Spain during the First World War. He created figurines for the ballets of Sergei Diaghilev and Anna Pavlova in 1918 and contributed to ultra-avant-garde magazines. In 1941 he returned to Madrid and then settled in Sitges in 1948. A commemorative exhibition will be held in Sitges in 2022 for the 50th anniversary of his death.

As a stylist, Zamora worked for figures such as Coco Chanel and designed costumes for the Casino de Paris. His career also included collaborations with artists and writers of the time, and he published work in avant-garde magazines. Despite the Nazi occupation of France, he continued to create until his final years and his work was the subject of a reevaluation in the 2020s.
