Biographie

Isaac Celnikier, born May 8, 1923 in Warsaw and died November 11, 2011 in Ivry-sur-Seine, was a French painter and engraver of Polish origin. His work was deeply influenced by his experience as a survivor of the massacres in the Białystok ghetto and the Birkenau camp.

After World War II, Isaac Celnikier pursued studies in monumental art under the guidance of Czech avant-garde painter Émile Filla to develop his artistic language. Returning to Warsaw, he founded the Arsenal group, an artistic collective that contributed to the local cultural scene.


In 1957, Celnikier moved to France, where he continued to explore painting and printmaking with a sensitivity informed by his historical experience. His work is distinguished by emotional depth and unique expression, reflecting both the memory of horror and the resilience of the human spirit.
