Henry Chapront (1876-1965) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator, known for his illustrations of Remy de Gourmont and Joris-Karl Huysmans. Inspired by Symbolism and Modernism, he left behind an original body of work that has been critically acclaimed.

Henry Chapront was born on February 26, 1876 in Rochefort-sur-Mer and died on June 15, 1965 in La Bachellerie. An artist from Charente, he went to Paris to enter the École des Arts Décoratifs. His youth was marked by a lack of means, but he was supported by the critic and publisher Émile Straus, who used his drawings to illustrateThe Criticismand makes him work with gouache for postcards.
In 1904, Chapront set up a makeshift studio in Viroflay. Heavily influenced by Symbolism and the modernist movement Die Brücke, his compositions attracted the attention of the 1920s generation. He collaborated with numerous literary publishers to place his original illustrations, which he sometimes engraved on wood or copper.
Chapront is particularly known for his illustrations forThe Bad Prayersof Remy de Gourmont andOver thereby Joris-Karl Huysmans. A retrospective of his work was organized at the Sainte-Croix Museum in Poitiers in 1985, attesting to the posthumous recognition of his talent.
