Van Hecke Arthur

Biography

Arthur Van Hecke was a French painter and lithographer from the Roubaix Group. Born in Roubaix on March 20, 1924 and died in Hondschoote on January 25, 2003, he is known for his portraits, seascapes and floral compositions. Educated by his grandparents after his parents separated, his childhood in Roubaix took place in different places, notably in the working-class district of "Pile", where he developed a passion for the city of Bruges and its artists, copying the works of Belgian masters such as James Ensor and Paul Permeke.

At the age of 13, he worked as a worker in a textile factory in Roubaix. Bruno Vouters emphasizes that his destiny seemed mapped out: "born in a poor neighborhood of Roubaix, this child from a modest family was made for the factory." However, Van Hecke had other aspirations: "At the age of 12, I began to paint seriously... It was while looking at reproductions of Belgian masters in a magazine that I became aware of painting."

During World War II, Arthur Van Hecke enlisted in the Free French troops, participating in the liberation of the Dunkirk pocket, while raising three daughters with his wife, Fernande Lamarque.

Arthur Van Hecke became a key member of the Roubaix Group, along with artists such as Robert Conte and Michel Delporte. After settling near Dunkirk, he founded the Gravelines Group with other artists in 1961. Self-taught, he began painting after the war, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Roubaisiens and in various galleries. His career took a turn after meeting Roger Dutilleul, who offered him a studio in Roubaix, thus facilitating his access to art collections and exhibitions.

In 1957, he moved to Petit-Fort-Philippe and founded the Gravelines Group in 1961. Together, they created a collection of prints that gave rise to the Gravelines Museum of Drawing and Original Prints, inaugurated in 1982. Arthur Van Hecke settled permanently in Hondschoote in 1982, where he continued to create until his death in 2003.

Lithography

Specifications

Dimensions : 63 cm x 56 cm

Signed in pencil, numbered 52/80

Details: Sold framed without glass

Reference:
HN5966

Learn more about Arthur Van Hecke
